How to control what happens when your customers try to cancel a plan

You have control over subscription cancellations and can have them cancel immediately or at the end of the billing period

By default, when a shopper clicks Cancel Plan in the customer portal, the plan ends immediately. That’s perfect for subscription-box shipments, but it can cut paid access short for memberships, services, or prepaid bundles.

To fix this, every PayWhirl plan has a Cancel behaviour setting that determines what happens after a shopper clicks Cancel Plan in the customer portal. Pick the option that fits your business model:

Cancellation options

  • Cancel immediately
    • Subscription, tags, and upcoming invoices disappear right away.
Best for: monthly boxes or other physical items.

  • Cancel at the end of the current billing period
    • The next invoice is removed, but benefits remain until the paid-for period finishes.
    • Customers see a “Scheduled to cancel” banner and can click Delete cancellation to change their mind.
Best for: memberships, digital goods, or services.

  • Do Not allow customer to cancel
    • The Cancel Plan button is hidden—customers must contact you to cancel.
Best for: fixed-term courses or service bundles that can’t be exited early.

  • Cancel after the last installment (appears only on chained plans)
    • Renewal stops, yet all prepaid shipments or services still go out.
    • Customers get the same “Scheduled to cancel” banner with a Delete cancellation link.
Best for: prepaid gift plans or seasonal bundles.

Wrap-up & best practices

  1. Match the option to the product. Immediate stops suit shipments; delayed stops suit access-based services.

  2. Test before launch. Create a test subscriber and walk through each setting so you know exactly when tags, orders, and invoices clear.

  3. Keep policies in sync. Update your FAQ or Terms so customers know what to expect.

  4. Need a hand? Open a support ticket and we’ll help you design or review your cancellation flow.

Using the right cancellation style keeps customers informed and ensures you deliver— and charge for—exactly what was promised.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
The PayWhirl Team
