Connect PayWhirl to ChatGPT or Claude (Beta)

Learn how approved Multi-Platform V2 merchants can request beta access, connect PayWhirl to ChatGPT or Claude, and use the MCP safely.

Written by Larry Brager

The PayWhirl MCP lets approved Multi-Platform V2 merchants work with PayWhirl information from a supported AI assistant. You can ask questions in everyday language, review account data, and—when appropriate—request changes using the PayWhirl tools available to that assistant.

Invite-only beta: PayWhirl must enable MCP access for your account before you connect. Message PayWhirl Support through your usual support channel and wait for confirmation before following the setup steps below. Beta features and available actions may change as we learn from merchant feedback.

This guide is for the PayWhirl Multi-Platform V2 MCP. It does not cover the separate Shopify MCP.

You will need:

• A PayWhirl Multi-Platform V2 account

• Access to ChatGPT or Claude

• Confirmation from PayWhirl that MCP beta access is enabled for your account

• Permission from your organization, if your ChatGPT or Claude account is managed by an administrator

Do not send PayWhirl Support your password, API key, or other sign-in secret. The connection uses a secure sign-in and authorization flow.

1. Request beta access

Message PayWhirl Support from the in-app messenger or by emailing team@paywhirl.com

Please include:

• Your PayWhirl account name and account email

• Whether you plan to use ChatGPT, Claude, or both

• A short description of what you hope to do with the MCP

You can copy this message:

Hi!

Please enable the PayWhirl MCP beta for [account name / account email]. I plan to connect it to [ChatGPT / Claude] and use it to [brief use case]. Please let me know when access is ready.

Wait until PayWhirl confirms that access has been enabled.

2. Connect PayWhirl to ChatGPT

ChatGPT labels can vary slightly by account or workspace. Developer mode may also be controlled by your workspace administrator.

Turn on Developer mode

1. Open Settings in ChatGPT.

2. Select Security and login.

3. Turn on Developer mode.

Add PayWhirl

1. Open Plugins from the ChatGPT sidebar.

2. Select the plus (+) button.

3. Enter the following connection details:

• Name: PayWhirl

• Description: Connect my PayWhirl account

• Authentication: OAuth

4. Review and accept ChatGPT's connection warning only if the server URL exactly matches the address above.

5. Select Create.

Sign in and authorize access

1. Follow the sign-in prompt that opens after you create the connection.

2. Sign in to your PayWhirl account on the official PayWhirl page.

3. Review the requested access and approve it if it matches what you expect.

4. Return to ChatGPT and confirm that the PayWhirl plugin page appears.

Never enter your PayWhirl password on a page whose address you do not recognize.

3. Connect PayWhirl to Claude

Claude discovers the PayWhirl sign-in method automatically. You do not need to choose OAuth or enter OAuth credentials yourself.

Individual Claude accounts

1. Open Customize → Connectors.

2. Select the Add button, then Add custom connector.

3. Enter PayWhirl as the name and https://api.paywhirl.com/mcp as the remote MCP server URL.

4. Leave the OAuth Client ID and OAuth Client Secret fields in Advanced settings blank unless PayWhirl Support specifically gives you values for them.

5. Select Add and follow the PayWhirl authentication prompts. Give tool permission as needed. We highly recommend being cautious with write and delete tools.

6. In a conversation, select the plus (+) button at the lower left, choose Connectors, and turn on PayWhirl for that conversation.

Claude custom connectors are available on Free, Pro, and Max accounts; Free accounts are limited to one custom connector. Interface labels may vary slightly.

Claude Team and Enterprise accounts

An Owner or Primary Owner must add the connector first:

1. Open Organization settings → Connectors.

2. Select Add.

3. Hover over Custom, then choose Web.

After the owner adds it, each member must open Customize → Connectors, find PayWhirl, select Connect, and complete the PayWhirl sign-in flow.

4. Try a read-only request first

Start with a request that only reads information. These examples match the current PayWhirl MCP capabilities:

• “List my subscription plans and show whether each one is enabled.”

• “Find the customer with the email address customer@example.com.”

• “List invoices with the status Payment Requested.”

• “List invoices created in the last 30 days that currently have the status Failed - Retrying. Repeat for Failed - Cancelled and Failed - Unknown payment status, then summarize the results.”

• “List my currently valid promo codes and show their redemption limits and usage.”

• “Summarize my current shipping and tax rules.”

• “What PayWhirl tools can you access in this conversation? Group them into read actions and change actions.”

• “Retrieve email template ID [template ID] and summarize its subject and content.”

Use a real email address or record ID from your own account when needed. PayWhirl can retrieve an email template when you already know its ID, but the current beta cannot browse all email templates to find one by purpose.

For payment failures, ask about invoice statuses rather than “failed charges.” Charge records do not currently include a general failure-status field.

5. Review changes before approving them

The beta includes tools that can change PayWhirl data, including tools for subscriptions, invoices, customers, plans, promotions, cards, and refunds. Before requesting a change:

1. Ask the assistant to identify the exact record and explain the proposed change without applying it.

2. Check record IDs, dates, amounts, and customer details.

3. Read any approval or confirmation prompt carefully.

4. If no confirmation appears, stop and reword the request as a preview.

5. During the beta, test change actions with non-production records whenever possible.

For example:

Find subscription [ID] and explain what would happen if it were paused. Do not make any changes.

Only send a separate instruction to make the change after the preview is correct.

Troubleshooting

PayWhirl says you do not have access

MCP access has not yet been enabled for the account you used to sign in. Contact PayWhirl Support and include the PayWhirl account name and email. Do not include your password.

ChatGPT cannot connect

• Confirm the server URL is exactly https://api.paywhirl.com/mcp.

• Confirm Developer mode is enabled and permitted by your workspace.

• Reopen the PayWhirl plugin page. If the tools do not appear, reload the page or remove and reconnect the plugin.

• Start a new conversation after reconnecting.

Claude cannot connect

• Confirm that PayWhirl beta access is enabled.

• Confirm the remote MCP URL is exact.

• For Team or Enterprise, ask an Owner or Primary Owner to add the connector to the organization first.

• Leave Advanced OAuth credentials blank unless PayWhirl Support supplied them.

A request returns no results

• Try a more precise record ID, email address, date range, or exact invoice status.

• Ask the assistant which PayWhirl tool and filters it used.

• Remember that an empty result may be valid—for example, your account may have no invoices in a selected failure status during that period.

Report beta feedback

When you contact PayWhirl Support, include the AI assistant you used, the wording of your request, the approximate time, and any error message or screenshot. Remove passwords, payment details, and other unnecessary sensitive information.

Disconnect PayWhirl

• ChatGPT: Open Plugins, choose PayWhirl, select Plugin actions, then Uninstall.

• Claude, disconnect your account: Open Customize → Connectors, find PayWhirl, and select Disconnect to end your authenticated PayWhirl connection.

• Claude, remove the connector: Open Customize → Connectors and select Remove from PayWhirl's connector controls or three-dot menu. Team and Enterprise owners can remove the organization-level connector from Organization settings → Connectors.

Disconnecting prevents new requests through that connection. Review your AI provider and PayWhirl security settings if you also want to revoke an existing authorization.
